La Source

La Source (pronounced lah-soos) is a small village located in Gonâve Island, Haiti; west-northwest of Port-au-Prince in the Gulf of Gonâve. The indigenous peoples of La Source are comprised of several family groups, totaling to roughly 2,500 people.

The villagers eat a daily diet of beans, rice, fish, and produce from their gardens. There is no electricity on the island, so families cook their meals in large metal pots over hand-dug pits.

There are two schools and one church located within the village. The buildings reflect their surroundings, with modest mud floors and thatched ceilings.

The knitting ministry provides the women of La Source with a sustainable way to bring in income for their families. The ladies pay for their children’s educations, food, medical bills, and other necessities from the profits of their work.
